Happy New Years

Let us celebrate 2014 with some poems and a commitment to always stop and appreciate a beautiful turn of phrase when it grazes our ears. Find poetry in the ordinary of 2014 and discover that absolutely no thing is ordinary.

To the New Year
BY W. S. MERWIN

With what stillness at last
you appear in the valley
your first sunlight reaching down
to touch the tips of a few
high leaves that do not stir
as though they had not noticed
and did not know you at all
then the voice of a dove calls
from far away in itself
to the hush of the morning

so this is the sound of you
here and now whether or not
anyone hears it this is
where we have come with our age
our knowledge such as it is
and our hopes such as they are
invisible before us
untouched and still possible

Invisible before us untouched and still possible.

Yes, that is a new year. A New Year with new words. If you look at new words of 2013, you will find mostly abbreviations and slang. Let us make new words that stop a person in their tracks. I often hear people say something beautiful like "rupugnacity," and then someone rudely tells them that rupugnacity is not a word. Make it a word. Words are new and falling out our mouths like dandelion spores.

It's all I have to bring today
by Emily Dickinson

It's all I have to bring today--
This, and my heart beside--
This, and my heart, and all the fields--
And all the meadows wide--
Be sure you count--should I forget
Some one the sum could tell--
This, and my heart, and all the Bees
Which in the Clover dwell.

Enjoy one more poem this year. I believe that if everyone read one more poem this year than they did last year, the world is moving in the right direction. Read a bad poem. Read a cheesy poem. Promise me you will read. And share! Share poems. Promise me you will share Spoken Poems, written poems, and invisible poems you find in the space between good company.

Promise?
